A Happy Ending

Here we go with another round of a topic that just doesn’t seem to want to go away. No, not the Tiger Woods debacle, although that’s getting way much more exposure than it ought to, and a lot has changed since the last time I brought that up, hasn’t it, when I said I applauded his keeping the matter a private one. Well, it looks like he himself was a can of worms that just can’t get closed again.

No, that’s not what I was referring to. The topic is prostate cancer. Remember the comment I made the other day about men who drink the most coffee have a 60% lower risk of developing the disease? I was going to make a joke and ask, sarcastically, just what was considered “the most” but thought it would be in poor taste given the subject matter. Well, yesterday, I discovered, through another source, that the 60% referred to 6 cups of coffee being drunk in one day. Drinking even between 1 and 3 cups per day can lower the risk by 20%. I’d say I fall into that range; 3 cups, on an average day is a reasonable amount that I would drink.

Another beverage has been found to have positive effects against the development of prostate cancer. Beer. Or, rather, an ingredient found in it. It’s a bitter flavoring agent, Xanthohumol, which is known to block the male hormone testosterone, which plays a role in the development in the deadly cancer. I haven’t found how much of it has to be consumed to do any good; I’d imagine by comparison, 6 beers could have its own residual effects. So, pick your poison. Tank yourself up on coffee and zip around peeing like a race horse all day or fall down drunk, and run the risk of peeing your pants in a stupor and maybe forgetting where you left your wallet,  but at least your prostate will have all those curative agents taking care of it.

And while we’re at it, a glass or two of wine a day reduces bad cholesterol while it boosts the good kind while it reduces blood clotting and helps lower the risk of heart disease.

Have you heard? Buddy the 4 year old Beagle is back home with his family in Eatontown, NJ. After 98 days of being stranded in the Manasquan Inlet. On August 31, the family was on the beach and when they attempted to switch leashes on dog, he bolted out of site. Two months later, someone had spotted him on Gull Island. He obviously walked along the railroad track that connects the fishing spot to the deserted island. Living mainly on clams he’d dig up and feasting on an occasional dead seagull, Buddy went from 35 pounds to 19. Muskrat Jack Neary, a longtime animal trapper lured Buddy into his trap this past Monday, with a his top secret formula bait and described the beagle as a bag of bones, a little lonely, cold, forlorn little dog curled up sleeping. The dog was returned to his family and a veterinarian gave him a clean bill of health and suggested the family feed Buddy multiple times a day for a couple of weeks.

And here we go, it’s back. You can start venting your frustrations over the holiday season with the Christmas Snow Globe. Have at it, folks. And have a great weekend!
