10 Ways to Save Money On Wine

One of my guilty pleasures is drinking wine.  Every since joining a wine club back in 2007 in DC my love for wine has only deepened over time.  I find wine to be a great way to add a classy touch to any home made meal and to celebrate the little things in life – like the end of a busy work day.  To save money, I usually subscribe to wine clubs that expose me to new wines at affordable prices.  My favorite is Heritage Link Brands Wine Club service which ships wines from the African continent and its Diaspora to my doorstep with a click of a mouse!

It requires a bit more savviness to save money on wine when you are out at a restaurant.  Fortunately, the WSJ just ran a article filled with tips on how to do exactly that and of course I had to share the best tips with you here!

Here are the top 3:

3. Bypass the second-cheapest wine on the list. Restaurateurs know that diners don’t want to appear cheap by ordering the least expensive wine on the list, so they’ll hose you for ordering the second-cheapest. The least expensive is actually a pretty good deal at many places.

2. Scope out the owner’s passion for value. If there are, say, a dozen wines from South Africa on the list and no more than a handful from anywhere else, chances are the owner knows and cares about South African wine — and therefore is more likely to know good values from there.

1. Avoid the Chardonnay tax. Chardonnay is America’s favorite wine. Just about everybody loves it and feels comfortable with it, which is why the Chardonnays on so many lists are grossly overpriced compared to other wines.

You can get the rest of their money saving wine tips here.  Cheers!
