Pizza wars

So it continued Monday night in my apartment – the pizza battle. Each week Katie and I do battle to see who can produce the best tasting pizza, made from scratch. I managed to get the edge on my pizza opponent by getting to our local delectable  pig storeEsposito and sonson Court and Union St Brooklyn which has been serving the local Brooklanites their pork specialties for near over 100 years. You can’t miss it with the huge animated fiberglass pig out the front. My favourites are the house made ‘hotwheel’, a wheel of sausage with just the right amount of zing, their ‘cappi’ ham and the house made ’spicy soppresseta which was my secret ingredient for my pizza creation. If your feeling a lazy day in the park you can have the lads make up a hero that is so big you can choose to share it with many others or hoard it to yourself, going back for nibbles as you choose. For my pizza I also to pick up some marinated peppers in garlic and olive oil conveniently located in the Esposito store which I thought was bending th rules a touch but went with it anyway. Katie is now in the realm of making the pizza sauce from scratch which adds a whole new component to the competition along with minutes of entertainment squeezing the tomato seeds out after being boiled. That part never gets old for me! With our pre make dough thawing we got to work, matched with a La Torre, Rosso di Montalcino, 2005 from Tuscany, Italy. Baby Brunello as some have nicknamed this style of wine. A great pizza or pasta match and any tomato based dishes. The high acidity to match the tomato, the sour cherry and  but the beauty is the uber ripe tannins. This particular challenge Katie went for a vegetarian option which may have been the difference – with the Esposito advantage we had a clear winner! Saluté!
